Shop on Main Street

 Sugar Magnolia Flower Company, as it is known today, began as Brown’s Floral Design. A long, long time ago.

The flower shop was founded in Weaverville in 1926, originally operating out of a home. In 1976, Brown’s opened its longtime flower shop at 25 North Main Street.

For generations, people in Weaverville came to Brown’s for the flowers that mark a life—birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, new babies, funerals, apologies, celebrations, and sometimes flowers for absolutely no reason at all.

Brown’s Becomes Sugar Magnolia

I purchased Brown’s Floral Design in 2017 and kept the name for several years. I wondered if there might still be a Brown somewhere in Weaverville who cared about it.

Eventually, it felt like time for a change.

And, frankly, “brown” isn’t a particularly good color for flowers.

Then 2020 happened.

COVID changed the way we all lived and worked. I closed the retail shop at 25 North Main Street and moved our day-to-day flower business into the studio just behind it. With so much changing anyway, it seemed like a pretty good time for us to change too.

Soooo…Brown’s Floral Design became Sugar Magnolia Flower Company.

The name comes from one of my favorite songs by my favorite band, the Grateful Dead. It felt more like me, more like the flowers we create, and more like the business was becoming.

And Now We’re Back

After several years working from our studio, Sugar Magnolia is opening a little flower and gift shop at 23 North Main Street in downtown Weaverville.

The shop will be filled with fresh flowers, botanical curiosities, floral gifts, plants, vessels, and beautiful things inspired by gardens and the natural world.
